商品訊息描述:
Focusing on the period of 1903-1917, Trachtenberg (European Jewish studies, U. of Albany, SUNY) examines how Yiddish evolved from being viewed as a corrupted German dialect to its status as the dominant language of the Russian Jewish press, a medium for modern literary criticism and science and learning, and the foundation of an ideology of Jewish liberation. He describes how literary critic Shmuel Niger, Marxist Zionist leader Ber Borokhov, and linguist Nokhem Shtif created the new Yiddish studies, which was concerned with standardizing Yiddish grammar, orthography and word corpus; establishing a literary tradition; exploring Jewish history and folk traditions; and creating an institutional structure to support the language's development and power over competing languages. Introductory chapters address the role of the 1905 Revolution and the uses and perceptions of Yiddish in the late nineteenth century. Annotation 穢2009 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
